History of Ћирилица

Sain Cyril invented the Glagolitic script, which is the oldest known Slavic alphabet, generally agreed to have been created in the 9th century. The Cyrillic script was a simplification of Glagolitic, based more closely on the Greek uncial alphabet, with additional letters to represent Slavic sounds absent in Greek, such as Б, Ш, and Ч. It was invented by disciple’s of Cyril and then named in honor of Saint Cyril and eventually became the standard script for many Slavic languages, particularly in Orthodox Christian regions.
